PAX Prime 2013: Incognita

I had never heard of Incognita before, but I am a fan of the games that Klei had made. The developer of Don't Starve, Shank, and Mark of the Ninja, Klei has had a track record of interesting mechanics coupled with beautiful 2D art in their games. This continues with Incognita.

Incognita is an interesting idea. The game combines the gameplay of a turn based strategy game with the concept of a spy based stealth game. In the demo, I had two spies. One who was great at hacking systems and another who was better at sharp shooting with his dart gun. I also had a third character who wasn't on screen, but the developers explained that he was back at the base controlling computer systems once they had been hacked.

In the demo I moved from room to room, hacking security cameras and computers. The developer explained that the goal was to get in, steal as much as possible, and get out without getting caught. I hacked a safe, and then used my control room based character to open it from the systems that were now available. My other sharpshooter character was then free to snag the cash inside. However, in doing so I overlooked the security camera that had seen me enter the room, and an alarm was sounded. The next turn, a security guard entered the room. I moved my characters out of sight, and waited for him in the next room. When he entered, I had several options of taking him out, but I decided to knock him out from behind with my sharpshooter that was hiding behind the door.

This game was intriguing, fun, and exciting. All of this action took place in a turn based system that really encouraged me to think about all the moves I was making. I really enjoyed what I played. The developers there told me that they are excited to get this game to the pubic, and will be releasing a Steam early access alpha in the next couple of weeks. They assured me that player feedback is the most important thing, and they have early access forms to present feedback that they will use to improve the game. Incognita was one of my favorite games at PAX Prime.
